0 Star and 1 Star are currently the fastest RTA-viable routes for beating the game. Both categories use a series of BLJs to access the Bowser stages early and finish the game with a minimal number of stars. Beating the game with 0 stars requires a precise, speed-dependent SBLJ setup to skip DDD, so the 1 star route is recommend for beginners. However, if you just starting with SM64 it is recommended to learn 16 Star before attempting these categories.

Rules

There are no restrictions. All forms of BLJ are allowed. Timing starts from power on and ends when the big star is collected at the end of the game.

Routes

1 Star

After completing Bowser in the Dark World, head downstairs into the basement. SBLJ tutorial (1 Star)

Also see the video below for a tutorial in Japanese.

After SBLJ, the rest of the run follows the same path as 16 Star after Mips Clip

0 Star

0 Star is possible due to Dire Dire Docks Skip (DDD Skip). DDD Skip is a trick involving BLJ's where Mario enters Bowser in the Fire Sea without having to enter Dire Dire Docks.Due to this skip, Mario is not required to obtain the 1 star in Dire Dire Docks required to push the water back to access Bowser in the Fire Sea.

DDD Skip

DDD Skip is possible because mario's speed is high enough to be in front of the Dire Dire Docks Painting on one frame, and behind it on the next frame[note 1]

DDD Skip Tutorial (0 Star)

DDD Skip Strats based on your door position

Also see the video below for a tutorial in Japanese.

After DDD Skip, the rest of the run follows the same path as 16 Star after Dire Dire Docks

Notes

  1. The minimum amount of speed you need is actually around 380 but RTA runners try to get over around 420
