The goal of the '''31 Star''' extension category is to complete the game as fast as possible while opening the 30 star door the intended way.


The 31 Star Category is a legacy (and extension to orthodox) category based on collecting 31 stars. The world record is held by speedrunner Xiah at a time of 24:40.<ref>[https://www.speedrun.com/sm64memes#31_Star]</ref> It has been the record since 19 May 2016 (around 5 years). 31 stars was the previous minimum amount of stars to beat Super Mario 64, prior to the discovery of the [[RTA Guide/MIPS Clip|MIPS Clip]] by Dom Dunc in 2004. The MIPS Clip allows the player to clip through the 30 Star door, allowing people to have a new minimum of stars (16). 31 stars was also the previous Any% until the MIPS Clip.
