The Real Time No Buttons Allowed Challenge, RTNBA for short, is a variation of the No Buttons Allowed Challenge, where all gameplay must be done in real time. I have collected 18 stars so far, most of which having similar strategies to the TAS No Buttons Allowed Challenge.

New Strats

• SL - Shell Shreddin’ for Red Coins: 7 out of 8 red coins can be collected fairly easily, but one of them on the freezing lake is much harder and was thought to only be possible with moneybag duplication. Fortunately, By very precisely sliding down a slope near one of the red coins, Mario will have the speed and distance to collect the red coin and barely make it back on land without dying and without having to use moneybag duplication. This was found by me.

The Permanently Squished Challenge is a challenge where the player tries to collect stars while being permanently squished.

43 Stars have been collected so far, most of which requiring complicated strats and thinking.

Difficulties of this challenge include the following:

• Fast movement (e.g. Racing Koopa the Quick, beating PSS under 21”0, using a shell)
• High jumps
• Aiming while sliding (because turning while sliding is super slow while squished)
• Grabbing objects if necessary
• Flying if necessary

Disadvantages include the following:

• Mario can’t use the B or Z buttons while squished (Except for going through textboxes and the star select screen)
• You can use a shell, but it is much slower

Stars

43 Stars have been collected so far, all of which except one were done by me. Most of these require complicated planning and strategies.

• BoB - Footrace with Koopa the Quick: Using a combination of janky object collisions with walls, framewalking, and slopes to run faster allows us to go fast enough to beat Koopa the Quick and get the star. This is also the only star that wasn’t collected by fefe.
• BoB - Shoot to the Island in the Sky: A second cannon shot or the Wing Cap has to be used to collect the star after opening its box since a normal jump isn’t high enough to reach it while squished.
• BoB - Find the 8 Red Coins: This star can be collected like normal.
• BoB - Mario Wings to the Sky: This star can be collected like normal.
• BoB - 100 Coins: This star can be collected like normal.
• WF - To the Top of the Fortress: We can use either a cannon shot or Hoot the Owl to get to the tower and the star.
• WF - Shoot into the Wild Blue: This star can be collected using the intended method.
• WF - Red Coins on the Floating Isle: We can use either cannon shots or Hoot to get to the floating islands with some of the red coins on them.
• WF - Fall Onto the Caged Island: This star can be collected like normal.
• WF - Blast Away the Wall: This star can be collected using the intended method.
• JRB - Can the Eel Come out to Play?: This star can be collected like normal.
• JRB - Red Coins on the Ship Afloat: Cannon shots can be used to reach the red coins on the ship.
• JRB - Blast to the Stone Pillar: The box can be opened pretty easily with a well-placed cannon shot, but a very precise cannon shot has to be used to get a good angle to do a rollout into the star.
• JRB - Through the Jet Stream: The star can be collected by swimming through the jet stream.
• CCM - Slip Slidin’ Away: It is pretty tricky, but possible to get down the slide despite turning being very slow while squished.
• CCM - Lil’ Penguin Lost: Because we can’t use the B or Z Buttons while squished, we have to chase/lure the baby penguin to a spot where we can use a cannon shot to grab her without pressing B. The star can be collected with a well-placed cannon shot.
• CCM - Frosty Slide for 8 Red Coins: The star can be collected by falling onto it from above. All the red coins are easily collectible.
• CCM - 100 Coins: This star can be collected like normal.
• LLL - Bully the Bullies: Clever routing must be used, and a well-placed lava boost can be used to get the star.
• LLL - 8-Coin Puzzle with 15 Pieces: This star can be collected with clever routing.
• LLL - Red-Hot Log Rolling: This star can be collected with clever routing.
• SSL - In the Talons of the Big Bird: We can get the Wing Cap by taking the warp, then using a cannon shot to open the Wing Cap block. We can use the Wing Cap and cannon to fly into Klepto and collect the star.
• SSL - Shining Atop the Pyramid: This star can be collected by taking the Tox Box route and (preferably) framewalking up the pyramid.
• SSL - 100 Coins: By using the same strat as the one used for In the Talons of the Big Bird to get the Wing Cap and cannon, we can use the cannon to fly and pick up the Cork Box. By using the Goombas nearby to force Mario to drop the box (since we can’t press Z to drop the box ourself), we can do the Breaking/Disappearing Cork Box Glitch and repeat this over and over to get 100 coins.
• DDD - Chests in the Current: This star can be collected like normal.
• DDD - Through the Jet Stream: This star can be collected by swimming through the jet stream.
• DDD - The Manta Ray’s Reward: This star can be collected like normal.
• SL - Snowman’s Big Head: A cannon shot can be used to get to the star, rather than climbing up the snowman. (Which is impossible while squished)
• SL - Chill with the Bully: This star can be collected using a freezing water boost to reach the star.
• SL - In the Deep Freeze: A cannon shot can be used to get inside the cubby with the star.
• SL - Whirl from the Freezing Pond: A rollout from the slope can be used to open to box, then using the shell to jump with enough speed to reach the star.
• SL - Shell Shreddin’ for Red Coins: This star can be collected using a rollout to open the box with the shell.
• SL - 100 Coins: Moneybag duplication can be used to get extra coins and reach 100.
• WDW - Shocking Arrow Lifts!: This star can be collected using a fire bounce to open the block, then falling onto the star from above.
• WDW - Top O’ the Town: A cannon shot can be used to open the box with the star, then collect the star afterwards.
• WDW - Secrets in the Shallows & Sky: A series of cannon shots can be used to reach some of the secrets.
• TTM - Blast to the Lonely Mushroom: This star can be collected using the intended method.
• THI - Pluck the Piranha Flower: This star can be collected using a shell to get up some slopes and reach the area with the Piranha Plants and the star.
• THI - Five Itty Bitty Secrets: This star can be collected in a similar way to Pluck the Piranha Flower using the shell.
• THI - Make Wiggler Squirm: By escaping from Chuckya when he is at just the right angle and position, Mario can be clipped through the slope, and swim into the loading zone without having to flood Wiggler’s cave.
• THI - 100 Coins: There are enough collectible coins for 100, and the Piranha Plant Glitch can be used to get extra coins.

Secret Stars

• SA - Red Coins: Because swimming isn’t affected from being squished, it is easy to collect the red coins and star.

• TotWC - Red Coins: Because flying isn’t affected from being squished, it is easy to collect the red coins and star.

Theoretically Possible Stars

• BoB - Behind Chain Chomp’s Gate: There is a strat used in the No Buttons Allowed Challenge which uses Backward shell hyperspeed to build up enough speed to clip through the gate. This might be possible while squished.

I have only confirmed 42 stars so far, but I believe THI 100 coins is possible.
