Backwards Star Order is a challenge where in each of the 15 main courses, all stars must be collected in reverse order (with the 100 Coin Star counting as Star 7 and therefore the first one that must be collected). In addition, no star door requirements can be skipped, as that would defeat the purpose of the challenge. Secret stars can be collected at any time. The challenge is impossible to complete, as the manta ray does not spawn in Dire, Dire Docks until the Board Bowser's Sub star has been collected.
Specific Stages
Bob-omb Battlefield
The player does not have access to any cannons or the Koopa Shell for the entirety of this level. In addition, since it is the only course that can be entered at the beginning of the game, the player will nave no access to the Wing Cap for the 100 Coin star. As there are only 94 coins available on the ground, this means they have to perform a precise long jump from the top of the mountain to reach the floating island and collect the remaining 6 coins.
After coming back with the Wing Cap, Mario Wings to the Sky is another problematic mission as it usually requires a cannon to collect all five secrets. The first four can be collected relatively easily by flying normally, but the fifth one is just barely too high to reach by flying from the top of the mountain. This means that Hyperspeed Flying must be used to reach it. Five stars can be collected in this course, as Koopa the Quick will never spawn, locking the player out of the first two.
Whomp's Fortress
As neither the cannon nor owl are accessible, Cannonless and Owlless must be used to collect Blast Away the Wall and Fall onto the Caged Island. Five stars can be collected in this course, as the tower will never spawn, locking the player out of the first two.
Jolly Roger Bay
Only the 100 Coin star can be collected in this course, as Through the Jet Stream does not spawn until the ship is floating.
Cool, Cool Mountain
Only two stars can be collected in this course, as Snowman's Lost His Head does not spawn unless the four stars before it are collected.
Big Boo's Haunt
Five stars can be collected in this course. Boos will not spawn in the merry-go-round unless the first star is collected.
Dire, Dire Docks
Two stars can be collected in this course. The 100 Coin star is difficult as the poles are not present, but it is possible to reach every coin with some very precise jumps off the submarine. The manta ray does not spawn unless the first star is collected, locking the player out of collecting any other stars here. Notably, this causes the challenge to be impossible to complete due to Board Bowser's Sub being locked.
Tall, Tall Mountain
Five stars can be collected in this course. The Ukiki on top of the mountain will not spawn unless the first star is collected.
Tiny-Huge Island
Four stars can be collected in this course. Koopa the Quick will not spawn unless the first two stars are collected.
Secret Stars
Wing Mario Over the Rainbow, Bowser in the Fire Sea, and Bowser in the Sky are all inaccessible, as well as two of the three Toads. Notably, the second star from MIPS is just barely possible as there are exactly 50 other stars that can be collected.
Damageless Challenge
This challenge requires Mario to never take any damage. This is defined as a wedge of the HP meter being removed. There are two variants: One where drowning damage is still allowed and one where it isn't.
Drowning Damage Allowed
All 120 stars are collectible in this challenge, as there are only two instances in the game where Mario is intended to take non-drowning damage to complete missions, both of which are easily avoided.
The first is for the star Blast Away the Wall in Whomp's Fortress, where hitting the wall and the subsequent fall damage will take away 3 wedges of Mario's health. The fall damage can be avoided with precise shots, but the final wedge of damage is only avoidable by using the Cannonless trick.
The other instance is in Hazy Maze Cave, where the toxic maze causes Mario to take damage as he runs through it. This is avoided by constantly jumping in areas where Mario would normally take damage, allowing him to reach safe areas while being in the toxic fumes as little as possible.
