The 31 Star Category is a legacy (and extension to orthodox) category based on collecting 31 stars. The world record is held by speedrunner Xiah at a time of 24:40.[1] It has been the record since 19 May 2016 (around 5 years). 31 stars was the previous minimum amount of stars to beat Super Mario 64, prior to the discovery of the MIPS Clip by Dom Dunc in 2004. The MIPS Clip allows the player to clip through the 30 Star door, allowing people to have a new minimum of stars (16). 31 stars was also the previous Any% until the MIPS Clip.

The general route for 31 stars goes as stated:

Rules

  • The only allowed method of passing the 30 Star door is to use the star power. Other methods such as MIPS Clip, SBLJ or HSWKing are banned.
  • Timing starts on reset and will end when you touch the final star after beating Bowser 3.
  • GameShark codes are not allowed.
  • VODs (video proof) are required for all new submissions. (These are the rules stated in Speedrun.com)
