The 31 Star category is a legacy category based around collecting 31 stars. This was previously the minimum total needed to beat the game, prior to the discovery of [[Mips clip]]. The general route through 31 star is as follows: Collect 30 stars to open the 2nd bowser door , collect the [[Board Bowser's Sub]] star in [[Dire, Dire Docks]], and finish off by performing [[Backwards Long Jumps]] past the 50 star door and the endless stairs to get to the final bowser stage.

The world record is held by speedrunner Xiah at a time of 24:40.<ref>[https://www.speedrun.com/sm64memes#31_Star]</ref> It has been the record since 19 May 2016 (around 5 years). 31 stars was the previous minimum amount of stars to beat Super Mario 64, prior to the discovery of the [[RTA Guide/MIPS Clip|MIPS Clip]] by Dom Dunc in 2004. The MIPS Clip allows the player to clip through the 30 star door, allowing people to have a new minimum of stars (16). 31 stars was also the previous Any% until the MIPS Clip.
