The Start Button Challenge

The only time the start button is needed is on the title screen, to start the game. Its only other uses are pausing, which is not required, and certain menuing, which can be done with the A and B buttons.

The C Buttons Challenge

The C buttons are only used for moving the camera and going into first-person. This is only used in one place in the entire game, to enter Tower of the Wing Cap by looking up at the ceiling. This makes that star only possible in isolation. The Wing Mario Over the Rainbow Red Coin Star is also only possible in isolation, since it requires the Wing Cap. All other stars have workarounds to avoid the Wing Cap (see Capless/Cannonless Challenge).

The R Button Challenge

The R button's only use is to change the camera view. This is not required.
