The 31 Star Category is a legacy (and extension to orthodox) category based on collecting 31 stars. The world record is held by speedrunner Xiah at a time of 24:40.<ref>[https://www.speedrun.com/sm64memes#31_Star]</ref> It has been the record since 19 May 2016 (around 5 years). 31 stars was the previous minimum amount of stars to beat Super Mario 64, prior to the discovery of the [[RTA Guide/MIPS Clip|MIPS Clip]] by Dom Dunc in 2004. The MIPS Clip allows the player to clip through the 30 star door, allowing people to have a new minimum of stars (16). 31 stars was also the previous Any% until the MIPS Clip.
