A 1-up Mushroom is an object that can be found in every level. If Mario touches this green mushroom, he is granted a Life.
1-Up Mushroom behavior
On the Ground
The mushroom is standing still on the ground, visible. For some mushrooms, the 1-up will launch in a direction if Mario gets close to him.
Spawned 1-Up mushroom
The mushroom can be spawned in multiple ways:
- Activating one or multiple 1-Up Checkpoints
- Opening a Yellow Block
- With a Butterfly Triplet[1]
- With a Monty Mole[2]
When it spawns, it flies in the air and is intangible for a few moment before becoming collectable
Non-Following
After it spawns, it will just fall on the ground, where he'll slide.
Following
After it spawns, it will then chase Mario, and will now be able to collide with the level geometry. This fun behavior lead to a Challenge called "The Green Demon Challenge", where the goal is to collect every star without collecting the following 1-up.
