Description

Twirling is an action in which Mario will first say "Boing!" spin like a helicopter, and fall down slowly by having a low terminal velocity. The lateral speed is deterministic of the speed Mario had before twirling. This mechanic is utilized in the A Button Challenge.

Twirling can only be achieved by jumping on Spindrift or Fly Guy, so it can't be used much, only being possible in Cool, Cool Mountain, Shifting Sand Land, Tall, Tall Mountain and Snowman's Land.

By holding the A button while twirling, Mario will fall even slower by twirling faster.

In beta footage, we can see that a Triple Jump originally made Mario twirl, while still starting with the height of the triple jump.
