SM64org:Super Mario 74 (SM64 Hack)
Super Mario 74 is Super Mario 64 Hack, created by Lugmillord.
Released on June 27 2011.
Setup
Setting up your emulator
In order to play the hack you need an emulator, Project64 1.6 is recommended, on 1.7 the game crashes in different places. You'll have to change the "Default Memory Size" to 8MB. To do this, click on Options -> Settings -> Options and uncheck "Hide Advanced Settings". Click OK and now do Options -> Settings -> Advanced Settings -> Default Memory Size -> 8MB. Also go in Options -> Settings -> ROM Settings -> Memory Size -> 8MB, so Super Mario 74 will load propertly.
Video Plugins
I recommend you to use Jabo's Direct 3.D 1.6, but gln64 will work for hack too.
About the camera
Mario 64 uses a set of hardcoded camera positions for each level, so Lakitu Perspective sucks at most of levels, so you should use Mario Cam (press "R" button and C down). But on some few stages Lakitu Perspective will work propertly, like on Sunny Beach, or Toxic Switch of Danger (not so propertly, but Mario Cam suck here).
Story about SM74
Here's how it started.
First Demo.
Lugmillord started working on SM74 on early November of 2010. Then he finished first demo of the hack and uploaded this video. To download the first demo, YouTubers needed to PM him for the link to the hack. First Demo had four main courses, three secret star courses and one Bowser's stage. Total stars: 40.
Course 1 - Dice-Fortress
Course 2 - Skyward Slopes
Course 3 - Azyre-Abyss
Course 4 - System of the Town
Frozen Slide (replaces "Princess Secret Slide")
Champion's Challenge (replaces "The Secret Aquarium")
Lava-Switch of Eruption (replaces "Tower of the Wing Cap")
Bowser's Badlands-Battlefield (replaces "Bowser in the Dark World")
End of First Demo Story.
Second Demo.
Lugmillord worked on second demo of his SM64 hack for two months (if I'm not mistaken). Then he uploaded this video. Again you needed to PM him for getting the hack.
Now the game starts completely different. The game starts with new overworld.
On first overworld you can get to these courses:
Course 1 - Dice-Fortress (can get to this course with 0 stars)
Course 2 - Skyward Slopes (can get to this course with 0 stars)
Course 3 - Azyre-Abyss (can get to this course with 0 stars)
Course 6 - Stalagmite Cave (can get to this course with 30 stars)
Course 7 - Icecrystal-Tower (can get to this course with 30 stars)
Course 8 - Overheating Oasis (can get to this course with 30 stars)
Toxic Switch of Danger (replaces "Cavern of the Metal Cap") (can get to this course with 0 stars)
Bowser's Badlands-Battlefield (replaces "Bowser in the Dark World") (can get to this course with 10 stars)
Bonus Stars you can get are:
2 Toad Stars (1st Toad is near "Overheating Oasis" course) (2nd Toad is on top of black building, where you can go to "Tower of the East" overworld)
2 MIPS Stars (on top of Bowser's Badlands-Battlefield building)
On "Tower of the East" overworld you can get to these courses:
Course 4 - System of the Town
Course 5 - Haunted Factory
Course 9 - Flowery Gardens
Lava-Switch of Eruption (replaces "Tower of the Wing Cap")
Frozen Slide (replaces "Princess Secret Slide")
Dust-Switch of Identity (replaces "Vanish Cap Under The Moat")
Bowser's Aquatic Castle (replaces "Bowser in the Fire Sea")
Bonus Stars you can get are: 6 stars (you can get one of the stars only with 50 stars)
There was also Champion's Challenge course, but you could get it only from entering it from the Castle, since "Exit Course" wasn't fixed, you are warping to the lobby of the castle and then you could get that Bonus Star. Lugmillord said that he planned to put that course to the last overworld.
End of Second Demo. Total stars: 101.
Final Release.
Lugmillord planned to finish the hack in April/May, but due to some problems with the hack, he could finish it at the end of June 2011.
Let's take a look at final release
Hmm... Some new music were added to the hack. The first overworld is same as in Demo 2 and the music is "Flipside, Super Paper Mario"
"Dice-Fortress" music is same as was before, but it was different instrument set.
Everything in first overworld wasn't changed. Let's just move to the second overworld (or "Tower of the East").
One red coin was moved to different place, now 1up takes place in "Bowser's Aquatic Castle" room. I entered "Haunted Factory" course and there was a different music. It was "Frantic Factory, Donkey Kong 64".
I also entered "Dust-Switch of Identity". The music was different, the name of music is "Song of Storms", but the person who made it forgot to let it loop.
Okay, I completed the second overworld map and I move to the final one.
Music is same, new overworld with lava and there are only pipes if you want to warp to some courses.
"Sunny Beach" pipe is on part with bob-omb and sand.
"Swampy Spring" pipe is on part with water ground and two brown platforms with roof.
Then I turn back to "Tower of the East" and door is broken, but here there is a sign with pipe.
If you enter than pipe you warp to "Tower of the East". Then there is a building with some star doors. Their graphic are "glitched", they look like the secreen when you load a savestate from Project64, I tried that on Mupen64 and Wii64, it was same. :(. Anyway it doesn't damage the game itself. :) Let's see what courses does that overworld has:
Course 10 - Swampy Spring
Course 11 - Sunny Beach
Course 12 - Cliff of Wrath
Course 13 - Molten Treasure Chest
Course 14 - Luminium-Sphere (Music: Stone Tower Temple, Zelda: Majora's Mask)
Course 15 - Ombru-Sphere (Music: Stone Tower Temple, Zelda: Majora's Mask)
Champion's Challenge (replaces "Secret Aquarium") (it has different color of slopes and different music "Eternal Star, Mario Party (1)")
Bowser's Crystal Palace (replaces "Bowser in the Sky") (you need to collect al red coins to get red coin star, there are more than 8 red coins) (Banjo-Kazooie textures were used in the level, different music was used here. It's "Hideout Helm (1st Version), Donkey Kong 64")
