As a general rule, in order to optimize your speed while riding a shell, you should aim to jump as much as possible when Mario's speed is around 57 or higher, and aim for 1st frame jumps when Mario's speed is 63 or higher. Refer to the mp4s below for a comparison.
As a general rule, in order to optimize you should keep 2 things in mind:
* Mario accelerates faster while grounded until speed 57, and while jumping for speeds greater than 57
* At high speeds (above 63 speed units) aim for 1st frame jumps to preserve Mario's speed

When riding on the shell, Mario's default forward speed is set to 24. Holding forward will allow you to eventually reach a speed cap of 63.  As you'll notice in the mp4 below, the speed increases at a decelerating rate the faster you go.

However, when jumping while riding the shell Mario's speed will increase at a constant rate of 1 unit every 7 frames. As it turns out, when Mario's forward speed reaches approximately 57, your acceleration is higher while jumping than while riding the shell on the ground.

Mario's speed is capped at 63 while on the shell, however this can be bypassed by jumping. While in the air, Mario will accelerate until he touches the ground again where the speed resets back to 63.  If a first frame jump is performed when landing your speed won't reset to 63 and you can gain more speed.

When riding on the shell, Mario's default forward speed is set to 24. As you hold forward, Mario's speed increases until it caps at 63. If you hold forward with the speed counter displayed in the HUD, you'll notice that the speed increases at a decelerating rate. Notice how long it takes for the speed to go from 60 to 61, 62 and 63 in the top right corner of the mp4 below.

When jumping while riding the shell however, the rate of acceleration is constant with Mario's speed increasing by 1 unit every 7 frames. Also, getting 1st frame jumps allows Mario's speed to increase beyond the 63 cap.

Riding the Shell

As a general rule, in order to optimize you should keep 2 things in mind:

  • Mario accelerates faster while grounded until speed 57, and while jumping for speeds greater than 57
  • At high speeds (above 63 speed units) aim for 1st frame jumps to preserve Mario's speed

See below for a comparison between first frame jumps after speed of 57, non-first frame jumps after 57, riding the shell, and continuous jumping.
