A TAS Competition, or TASComp for short, is a competition that involves TASers of all skill levels competing in an event where they must use their skills and knowledge to complete a given task as fast as possible. The fastest entry that meets all the criteria wins, and monetary prizes are usually given out.

History

The first competition was created in 2009, as N64 TASing became more widespread. It attracted attention almost immediately. Today, there are four active TASComps that have released tasks in the past year. The largest ones are the official TAS Competition, hosted by CSZ, Superdavo0001, Non5en5e, and others, and the Speed TAS Competition. Other TASComps include WeirdComp, hosted by nim, and LameComp, hosted by Experge, as well as several one-off tournaments and tasks. The COVID-19 pandemic had a widespread effect and the psychological strain caused the majority of all TASComps to be shutdown.

Basics

Usually, a TAS Competition has a set of rules that the players have to follow. These can be universal or varying from task to task, or both. Common rules include a certain amount of objectives (coins, enemies killed, stars, movement, etc.) and banned strats (usually PU movement, BLJs, shells, etc.) TAS Competitions are usually shared online, such as Discord, where all three current TASComps are hosted. These are used to get in touch with players from across the globe, to ask questions, to submit entries, and to share results.
