The 31 Star | The 31 Star Category is a legacy (and extension to orthodox) category based on collecting 31 stars. The world record is held by speedrunner Xiah at a time of 24:40. It has been the record since 19 May 2016 (around 5 years). 31 stars was the previous minimum amount of stars to beat Super Mario 64, prior to the discovery of the MIPS Clip by Dom Dunc in 2004. The MIPS Clip allows the player to clip through the 30 star door, allowing people to have a new minimum of stars (16). 31 stars was also the previous Any% until the MIPS Clip.
The general route for 31 stars goes as stated:
* Get 30 stars in anyway.
* Get one star in Dire, Dire Docks, and beat Bowser in the Fire Sea (No Reds)
* Do the 50 Star Door and Endless Staircase Backwards Long Jumps
* Beat Bowser in the Sky (No Reds)
